What do you think when the Bible said “And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.” (Acts 9:18) ? This is kind of fancinating, how would Saul (later called Paul) who had good eye sights, before he met Jesus on the way to Damascus, suddenly became ill and have scales on his eyes that caused him to be blind?
I had been pondering on the meaning of this Bible passage “Is this really a scales like that of fish fell off from Saul’s eyes or was it figurative meaning?”
There is nothing in the words of the sacred text which compels us to think of literal scales. (in Bible passage, however, a literal flaking-off of foreign substance is meant, scales dropped from Paul’s eyes). We have here rather a description of the sensation which terminated the three days’ period of blindness which the apostle suffered after his meeting with the risen Lord on the road to Damascus. Then, apostle himself does not use this expression in his own graphic description of the same experience: “In that very hour I looked upon him” (Acts 22:13). The phrase has, however, come into English, for we speak of “scales falling from one’s eye” when we mean a sudden illumination or remembrance or a dissipation of harassing doubt.
And one morning, a breakthrough as I was jogging and doing quiet time, my Senior Partner, our Holy Spirit, reveals to me that it is “Figurative or symbolical meaning.” It is now crystal clear to me the meaning of this Bible passage.
Especially those who had gone through Bible school/study, they should know that in those OT days, the Greeks, Jews likes to use figurative or symbolical way of saying thing to represent a broader meaning of events or messages.
Here are some facts that you can determine if “Scales that dropped off Saul’s eye” is more of figurative meaning or just literal meaning:-
1. Apostle have had perfect vision persecuting Christians before he met Jesus on the way to Damascus. Why would Father Jesus put scales over Saul’s eyes to had caused him to be blind for 3 days?
2. Book of Acts is written by Apostle Luke and Paul himself did not mention about literal event of scales dropped from his eyes. (Acts 22:13).
3. Here is the idiom meaning of “Scales dropped from eyes” – if scales dropped from someone’s eyes, they are suddenly able to understand truth.
Example in the Songs of Song of Solomon Chap 4 and 7
Your eyes are like doves behind your veil.
… Your hair is like a flock of goats…
Your teeth are like a flock of newly shorn ewes…
Your lips are like a scarlet thread,
Your temples are like a slice of pomegranate…
“…Your neck is like the tower of David
built with rows of stones
on which are hung a thousand shields…
If a reader could not interprete and understand the figurative meaning of this beautiful language, then the woman being pictured is very very ugly. As depicted in picture, taken from http://www.acts17-11.com/snip_song.html
You should be able to picture a beautiful woman if you’d understood the figurative meaning of the woman discribed by King Solomon, i.e.visualised a beautiful woman with a very well refined or almost shining neck, as of tower meaning of good length and with long hair with strenght that runs down with like that of those advertisement for shampoo where the model would dropped their hair and beautifully fall down like goats rushing down the hill and straightening up.
So what is the meaning and why it was being discribed that Saul received sight after having the scales fell off from his eyes?
Perhaps to explain it in better clarity, you can imagine picking up the most clear fish scales pair that you can find and put in onto your eyes like contact lens. Even how clear the fish scales maybe, they can never provide clear vision, it is blurry, marked by the growth ring of the fish throughout the years. It is true, all of us, living in the fallen world, DO NOT have clear eye sights, we do not know where we are going, everything is of the worldview vision, blurry and full of deceits. But mercy from Lord Jesus that Saul had met HIM on the road, and he couldn’t see because Lord Jesus was in the process of healing his pairs of sinfuls eyes. Then on the day, healing came, Saul became Paul and his sight is restored to see the Kingdom of God, his perspective is completely changed, he can see clearly his destination and the vision set forth by Lord Jesus. The people said that Saul is a complete changed man, “And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.” (Acts 9:18). Understand the meaning “it had been scales”? If one interprete laterally, it would meant Saul eyes were specially make from scales. That sounds funny wouldn’t it?
So, my dearest Christian brothers and sisters, Do you have the scales removed or fell off from your pair of eyes? If you had not, that’s the reason why you aren’t seeing any visions from Father Jesus and you aren’t sure where you are heading, the worst part is that you had not received deliverance without knowing. You had grown up in Church, do the “good works” and learned to be a “good Christian”. This is typical of many Christians who was like the rich man in purple robe.
Once you have that “Scales dropped from your eyes” You will receive Gift of Wisdom which enable you to see and inteprete vsions and dreams.
Jesus on How the Rich Get to Heaven (Mark 10:17-25)
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Here is the serious notes from Father Jesus:
“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21
The message is very clear, if you, being a Christian and called Jesus “Lord, Lord” but did not do the will of Father God, then you cannot enter Kingdom of Heaven.”
- Many still could not understand the true meaning of “doing the will of Father God”. All I can said is that you got to have direct Vision, dreams and revelations from Father God Jesus, in this way you can be very sure of doing the will of God. But if you are like the rich young man as depicted in Mark 10:17-25. Then you probably doing the “will as prescribed by your leaders or pastors” and NOT FROM THE SOVEREIGH GOD FATHER JESUS.
Addon notes: 31/1/15 Union of Holy message, Rev Dr A.R. Bernard preached the same things. He spoke about, church people judging people through theirs lens. We need to take off these distorted “fish scale lens” or do adjustment to lens that is prescribed by God. Just like glasses or contact lens, if dirty you need to clean it to see clearer. Much better is your sight is perfect and don’t need to wear any lens or glasses.
Stanley Tan (Posted in FB) both Rev Dr A.R. Bernard preached exact same thing I wrote as inspired by HIM.
Dr A.R. Bernard in the house. He speaks about people make judgement by viewing through dirty lens. Luke Chapter, Jesus spoke about parable of putting light on lampstand. In retrospect, I once wrote about “The scales that dropped from Paul’s eyes” I said that, that is symbolic meaning of spiritual blindness where we see through blurry lens of fish scale. Bernard mentioned the parable of good Samaritan. It is same as people who “wore sunglasses. Praise the Lord for Union of Holy message.Amazing Union of Holy message. From AR Bernard, lens and good Samaritan. From Pastor Kong, same passage I posted this morning “Who Cares!” Jesus said about he was hungry, no one feed him. In so much as you did to the little one, you did it on to me.
Added note 23/1/16
Wearing sunglasses is different from scales dropped from your eyes in that you knew your wrong doings but hide your pupil from people’s penetrative view. YOU CAN’T HIDE YOUR LYING EYES.
