While I was a small, there were many ghost stories being told. That of headless ghost roaming around the streets and ghost in red dress seeking revenge.
I remembered at very young age, maybe 6 or 7 years, my mom brought me to a cinema opposite our Chye Kay Village open air theatre. I think those days in the mid 60s, the cinema was showing in black and white. My mom would cover my eyes with her hand whenever the scary part appears. I could only peek in between her finger, of the ghostly figure walking around the well looking for victim.
Then I also remembered that my elder sister and cousin would tell me that by biting our fingers, and throw the drop of blood towards the ghost will frighten them away. But it was just a believe, I didn’t try that; neither did any of my sister or cousin sacrifice their precious blood for this purpose as I can recall. It is just plain talking only. Since childhood, there is wide spread believe that there co-exist of ghost and human on earth, only those with low spirit will be able to see them or with dog’s eye can see them.
My neighbourhood Indian friend had his face scratched by ghost. (Around mid 60s)
At that time, after we heard his story, all of us said that he deserved it. What happen was, every morning about 5.30am, this brave young Indian boy will go to the graveyard opposite my zinc roof bungalow house across the road. He would shit at one of those grave and them come back home, but this time round I think he really pissed off the resident at the graveyard. He told his parent what happen. He was about to leave the place after having done his business there, then he saw a white paper came down from the mango tree and then the paper turn into a ghostly figure and started to scratch his face. He said he was being attacked as he ran to his home. Everybody can see the gruesome finger scratch mark all over his face. At their house door (they rented from my second uncle), above the door entrance they hung lots of dried leaves to ward off the devil and it seems to work. From that day onwards, this Indian boy never ever dare to do his business at the graveyard anymore, and nobody knew the reason why he did that in the first place.
A woman attacked by ghost evident by arm being pulled back and stuck in that position. (Around mid 60s)
We heard a woman screaming frantically at around 10.45pm. I was watching a drama on T.V. with my family members. Every one of us heard the frightful screaming but none of us dare to open the door to find out what’s happening. The next day, I heard my father spoke to a neighbourhood friend. His friend said that a woman was attacked by a ghost as she was walking along Chye Kay Road (those day, the road wasn’t paved, harden red soil served by dimly lit street lights), and she ran but the ghost pulled her hand so hard that it dislocated her arm and stay in the pulled back position. I didn’t get to see the woman, as she was perhaps in a clinic. That was being relate to us by my father. I believed the story as I had heard the screaming the previous night.
A tenant told me that she saw a ghost walked on railway track near to Hillview area (Around July 2002)
I was marketing an apartment for sale or rental at Hillview area (apology cannot disclose the condo). An Indonesian lady responded to my advertisement. So I told her about the unit I am marketing. As a dutiful agent, I advise her on the price, location and decor and the terms and condition. Then to attract her further, I said that this unit is not facing pool and at quiet corner facing the greenery. That moment, she interrupted “Did you say facing the greenery, may I confirm if it is facing the railway track also?” I replied her “Yes, it is facing the railway track on the left.” Before she even spoke, I had goosed bump and I do not know why. She said in a shaken tone “That unit, I can’t take, I saw ghost!” Then, I asked her “What happened? What do you mean?” Then she replied me “There was an agent rented out this unit to me that faces the railway track. Then one evening, I was at the balcony hanging my cloth and I saw a lady in white walking on the railway track towards my direction. She had very long hair, but at that distance I couldn’t see her face. Immediately I kept my clothing, packed everything and left the place. I forgo my deposit money and never come back again.” After that incident, I somehow decided to stop marketing the unit. The owner bought this condo for her daughters to stay but all of them didn’t want to stay there. Instead, they stayed with the family at Yio Chu Kang home.
“Look there is an old woman washing the kitchen floor” potential buyer told me (Around 2003-2004)
This was an apartment a home owner gave me sole agency to market, it was a 3+1 unit located at 10th floor at Hillview area. The lady owner came to see a new condo I was marketing and told me about her unit. She wasn’t free to meet me at the condo but her father came to show me and I was advised not to come to the unit after 6.45pm, her reason was it is too dark. I met the father outside the apartment; first thing I notice was that the house number was being removed. I didn’t ask the owner’s father why. Then I went in, I think about 6pm and have a look around of the house. The father was maybe about 57 years of age. After seeing the house and take down all the attributes of he house, I advertise the property for sale. As usual, I screen for good potential buyer and one co-broke agent make appointment to see the house with his buyers at 6.30pm. There was some delay, finally the whole buyer gang came, the parent, two brothers and two sisters came. The owner’s father was already at the house waiting for us. Just at entrance, I was about halfway in, the younger sister poke her head in and mentioned to me like “there is someone cleaning the floor”. I wasn’t paying attention at her remark because I was very focus on selling the unit. Then I invite them to come into the house. There seems to be some reluctance to enter the house. I encourage and persuaded them and one by one they came in to the main hall with me, I wanted to show them the kitchen first but all of them seems unwilling to see the kitchen. So I lead them the bedrooms, and all of them after having seen the bedroom were left with kitchen to see. Then the son (introduced to me by co-broke agent that he is the buyer) said that he don’t have to see the kitchen. Then I look at both the sister and the younger one decided to go with me to the kitchen to see, while the rest stay put at the living area. The two sisters went with me to the kitchen area and the younger one in particle seems to be more interested in looking for something. Then we all went down the lift together bedding goodbye to house owner’s father. We all walked together towards the swimming pool and I asked them for feedback on the house. All of them seem stung, lost for words and at the same time I saw the frightful reddish face of the brother and none of them want to say a word to me. Then I turned to the agent and ask him for feedback. The agent also said nothing, he just said that they need to go back and discuss.
As I reached home, I started to recall the whole event. Then I remembered the younger sister did told me that she saw an old lady cleaning the kitchen floor. My hair started to raised by the goosed bumps. I remembered that while my family was moving into Ang Mo Kio, my father’s friend advised him not to take flat at Bukit Batok because there was story told that an old lady ghost is cleaning at the kitchen floor of home owner at certain house at certain time. I start to realise that this description matches what the younger sister was telling at the door entrance. At once, everything started to confirm the spooky ghostly happening. That the house owner did not want me to arrange viewing the house after 6.30pm. That the house number was being removed. The younger sister saw the old lady cleaning kitchen floor. The whole family were reluctant to view the kitchen because of the reason. At the swimming pool area, the whole family showed me their frightened look and not saying anything about the house after viewing. A few days later I went to the condo again, this time round I take the opportunity to speak to the security guard personnel. A Malay told me that there was one Chinese contractor fell to his death from the ladder during painting and nobody knew why he fell. Could it be that he saw the old lady cleaning the kitchen? Actually I wanted to ask the lady house owner more detail about the house but decided not to do so because I feel that I shouldn’t involve in it anyway as the old lady did not let me see her probably because I wasn’t the buyer. And she let the buyers saw her because she don’t want them to buy over the house. Then, I told the owner that I do not want to market the property without giving any reason.
The contractor went back to Golden Landmark S.C. just before midnight (Around 2005)
I secured a shop space at 4th level Golden Landmark S.C. I was running my web design and hosting business over there. I thought it was a very ideal location for me to run auction web site also. Take in used good and mark up for profit. What’s more can I ask for? Minutes to Bugis MRT station and the shop have very good double huge glass panel frontage. So I worked at the shop daily from 10.30am till almost midnight 23.35 hours, just enough time for me to catch my last MRT train home. At that time I stayed in Jurong West, The Floravale condo. Since the shops main entrance were closed as the management guideline for shop to operate up to 9pm only. Working after 9pm can be tiring because the central air conditioning was off and it was quite stuffy at times. For me to get out of the building there was only one exit, that was through the staircase that leads out to the door just outside the night club. Every night I would past by those Chinese hostess smoking outside the door.
Then one evening also about same time 23.40 hours, I would get out of the exit door and walked down the stair case. I walked down flight of steps, cleared the 3rd floor, and the 2nd floor and then just about reaching the ground floor on the 4th step from ground level, I heard heavy footstep behind me, I turned around, and I saw a pair of legs worn browned safety booth walking up the staircase, just turn the corner and I could see his body just the blue jean and boot because at that angle it was blocked the wall. Sure, I knew who or what is it and I quickly get out of the door exit and hurried home. The next day, I told the incident to my security friend who run the business there, and he told me that during the construction of Golden Landmark Hotel, there was one foreman killed in an accident. That really sent chills down my spine. Then two days later, while I was in my shop, my security friend throng into my shop space and showed me his right bandaged leg. I asked him what happened? He said that what I told him was true. He offered the burning of incense and some offering at the staircase and saw the ghost, and he told me that he sprained his leg when he jumped the staircase while running away in fright.
Friends, all the story above is my true encounter. Should I because I am a Christian now say that all my these experience are hoax? Well let’s check with the bible.
If you do a google search on the internet, you will find that all or majority of would say that there is no such thing as ghost, only spirits. Here is some explanation taken from http://www.gotquestions.org/ghosts-hauntings.html
Question: “What does the Bible say about ghosts / hauntings?”
Answer:Is there such a thing as ghosts? The answer to this question depends on what precisely is meant by the term “ghosts.” If the term means “spirit beings,” the answer is a qualified “yes.” If the term means “spirits of people who have died,” the answer is “no.” The Bible makes it abundantly clear that there are spirit beings, both good and evil. But the Bible negates the idea that the spirits of deceased human beings can remain on earth and “haunt” the living.
Hebrews 9:27 declares, “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” That is what happens to a person’s soul-spirit after death—judgment. The result of this judgment is heaven for the believer (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23) and hell for the unbeliever (Matthew 25:46; Luke 16:22-24). There is no in-between. There is no possibility of remaining on earth in spirit form as a “ghost.” If there are such things as ghosts, according to the Bible, they absolutely cannot be the disembodied spirits of deceased human beings.
The Bible teaches very clearly that there are indeed spirit beings who can connect with and appear in our physical world. The Bible identifies these beings as angels and demons. Angels are spirit beings who are faithful in serving God. Angels are righteous, good, and holy. Demons are fallen angels, angels who rebelled against God. Demons are evil, deceptive, and destructive. According to 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, demons masquerade as “angels of light” and as “servants of righteousness.” Appearing as a “ghost” and impersonating a deceased human being definitely seem to be within the power and abilities that demons possess.
Here is my take on explaining the universal acknowledgement of ghost amongst all races and religion.
The famous story of Peter walks on Water :-
Matthew 14:24-27 “Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”
Mark 6:47-50 “Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. 48 He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!”
If there is no ghost, why would the disciple afraid of it and even exclaimed the sighting of ghost? Well, I had state my point. Ghost are souls (or spirit) that was being left on earth to roam about. They had not been taken by Hades to “hold place” or in hell. No one know the reason why they were left around. They can’t be the dismembered spirit as the like of demons and other evil spirits. While I don’t believe in them, neither worship them nor afraid of them as I a powerful Holy Spirit who lives in me. You don’t worship them either! I only acknowledge their existence I had my encounter before being reborn again. Plead the blood of Lord Jesus Christ and any spirit will fleed!
The Bible also clearly state that no Christian should be involved or have anything to do with spiritual realm unless he or she is being lead by Holy Spirit in the spiritual realm of Kingdom of Heaven or spiritual battle. Involvement in spiritual realm has he danger of getting oneself involve in sorcery or spirit of divination, witchcraft or even attempting to draw power from the dark spiritual forces.
Addon notes : Was disturb and uneasy after posted this article. Then at dinning time, quiet time with HIM. I teared a little bit as if hearing the heartbeat of Father Jesus “It don’t have to be this way, these lost souls could had enjoyed life in heaven if they had received salvation. But they were stranded in midway before hell after judgement when they die.” I know our Lord Jesus was sobbing for the lost souls. Choo Thomas and many others who was brought to witness hell had witnessed Lord Jesus sobbed.
