Favouritism is Bad

Favoritism is Bad

Is favoritism really that bad? Considering the fact that if I am the favorite of someone, there is no doubts that I will continue to receive preference treatment. This isn’t bad right? But a word of caution, the person who practiced favoritism also needs you to gain his or her favors from time to time. Any lapsed in this aspect will probably shift their preferential treatment to another person who can win their favors by carrying their balls. In another words, you have to continue to do things that gain favors from the person who practiced favoritism and this not only corrupt your character further but also the other person.

Dictionary meaning of favoritism:-

1. the practice of giving special treatment to a person or group

2. the state of being treated as a favourite.

3. unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice.

Why favouritism is bad?

  1. Apportioning of unequal love to individual or group.
  2. Inclination towards prejudice against certain people.
  3. Mentor people who may not as well equipped as the other larger pool of people.
  4. Creates resentment amongst the peers.
  5. Corrupt the character of the individual.
  6. Trust only those people being favoured even though they may have underlying selfish motive or unethical ways.
  7. Shielding the wrong doings of the favoured people.

Lord Jesus have had favourite disciples, did he practice favouritism?

The answer is no. Let’s us examine the bible to take account of how Lord Jesus treated His disciple.

  1. Equal love for all – HE even sat down with tax collectors or sinners instead of sitting only with his favourite disciples. Lord Jesus willingly give up HIS life for all. Mark 2-15 “And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.”
  2. Equal right to receive healing – As many as poor, non believer or believers, they received healing in accordance with God’s will.
  3. Equal treatment – 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes. If there is favouritism,  Lord Jesus would had ensure that HIS favourite disciples would take the food first and not be starved but HE groaned, gave prayer and feed 5,000 people. John 6:9-11. Jesus showed His authority as God by feeding 5,000 men with 5 barley loaves and two fish.
  4. Equal right to do ministry – Lord Jesus send out two by two to reach out to people. All were equally commanded not to bring excessive. Luke 10:1 “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.”
  5. Equal right to be heirs – All equally became the heirs of Abba Father, God our Lord Jesus upon receiving salvation.  Galatians 4:4-7 “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So through God you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir.”
  6. Unbiased praise and compliment – Lord Jesus praise and compliments all who had done good work and faith, such as the Samaritan woman and the centurion. Even Peter was one of HIS favourite disciple, Lord Jesus rebuked Him calling him “Satan” Lord Jesus don’t show partiality. Mark 8:33 “But turning and looking at his disciples,Jesus rebuked Peter, saying,”Get behind me,Satan, because you’re not thinking God’s thoughts but human thoughts.”
  7. Equally mentored everyone – Lord Jesus gives teaching and mentored all HIS disciple equally. Instructions maybe be given differently depending on the strength and talent of the individual for the function of HIS ministry. (See Next illustration).
  8. Everyone is being reward equally – Matt 20:1-16 “Parable of workers in vineyard.”

If there is no favouritism, then why only Peter, James and John were brought to a high mountain and witness His transfiguration?

For certain critical mission, Lord Jesus must choose only those who are spirit filled who will obey Lord Jesus’ words and who will seal their mouth as commanded. Matthew 17:9 “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.” The chosen three did not say a word. Had he brought all His disciple up there, certainly there will be some who will not seal their mouth and spoke about it freely, and probably jeopardised God’s plan for the salvation and Lord Jesus knew about it. So certain critical mission only selected few will be called to work with Lord Jesus.

Is there any known bad consequences of not obeying Lord Jesus command to keep quiet?

Mark 1:42 – 45 “A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”  Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.”

Thus the leper had jeopardized Lord Jesus plan because he didn’t seal his mouth. This event illustrated the point being disciples Lord Jesus may not be called for certain mission.

Lesson learned from Lord Jesus. In ministry, you chose only people who are Spirit filled and obey the living Words of God. If you chose only people you favoured, you are doomed for failure because these people will not sealed their mouth whenever required.

How do I know if I had practice favouritism ?

  1. Tendency to give special treatment to a person or a group.
  2. Tendency to cover up wrong doing of a person or group.
  3. Harbours prejudice against certain person or a group of people.
  4. Inclination towards giving assignment to a person or a group even though they may not be equipped for the job instead of the better equipped person or the group.
  5. Rewards given to the person or a group even though they may not have the good merit as compared to others.
  6. There is resentments, conflicts and unhappiness amongst the peers. (the resultants of the above points).   Genesis 37:3-4, TLB. “Now as it happened, Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other children, because Joseph was born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob gave him a special gift-a brightly colored coat. His brothers of course noticed their father’s partiality, and consequently hated Joseph; they couldn’t say a kind word to him.”

James 2:1 “My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favouritism.”

James 2:9  “But if you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.”

Acts 10:3 “So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality.”

“Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favouritism.” Colossians 3:25

Leviticus 19:15. “Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.”

Addon notes 156/10/2012 as revealed by HIM – Usually people who practice favouritism are self-centered person because they looked inwardly at themselves, to assess who are those who treat them well or know how to carry favors, they already prejudged certain people based on their like or dislike and they favors those who can satisfy their ego (self-centerness).
